On Monday, February 27, the Graduate Senate discussed a University proposal to open a Chick-Fil-A restaurant on campus, in light of the fact that Chick-Fil-A is alleged to have provided financial support to organizations actively opposing gay rights and gay marriage.
During this meeting, a nonbinding resolution was passed stating that the Graduate Senate “is NOT in support of the bid by Chick-Fil-A” to become a vendor on campus.
GSG also released the following statement in support of the resolution:
GSG POSITION ON CHICK-FIL-A PROPOSAL
On February 27, 2012, the Graduate Senate passed the following nonbinding resolution: The Graduate Senate is “NOT in support of the bid by Chick-Fil-A” to become a vendor at Northeastern.
This resolution followed discussion and debate about the issue. Most Senators felt, in light of Chick-Fil-A’s financial support for groups advocating against gay rights and gay marriage, that it was not appropriate to invite Chick-Fil-A onto campus, and conduct its business on this campus, because it contradicts Northeastern’s values and standards with respect to diversity and the University’s commitment to its LGBT community.
Further, it is not in the interest of the University to allow onto campus a vendor associated with these beliefs. Gay rights and gay marriage is an issue that is poised to increase in visibility in the coming years. It is not in the University’s best interests to take a position widely perceived as siding against gay and civil rights.
Since that vote, SGA has also voted against the proposal, and the University has stated that Chick-Fil-A is no longer under consideration as a future vendor.
