JDRF – Whys & Hows of Venture Philanthropy for Patient Advocacy

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, policy influence, and a working plan to bring life-changing therapies from the lab to the community. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF is currently sponsoring $450 million in scientific research in 17 countries.

Peter Lomedico, Ph.D., joined JDRF in 2005 to lead the Industry Partnerships Program, an effort that supports the transfer of early-stage research to the commercial sector. Dr. Lomedico works closely with the research scientists to accelerate the development and delivery of disease- modifying therapeutics and devices for people with T1D by engaging industry on JDRF research projects. Dr. Lomedico has a diverse background in molecular biology, diabetes research, and drug discovery, with more than 25 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience. Previously, he worked at NeoGenesis Pharmaceuticals, as VP of Strategic Alliances, at CuraGen Corporation as VP of Discovery Research, and at Genome Therapeutics Corporation, as VP of Human Genetics.
