On October 14th, a group of 30 first-year pharmacy and speech-language pathology and audiology students engaged in their first interprofessional education experience at Northeastern University. As part of our initiative to reach students early in their academic career, Innovations in Interprofessional Oral Health teamed up with Dr. Anita Young, Director of Continuing Pharmacy Education and Dr. Ennio Mingolla, Professor and Chair of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, to facilitate a 60 minute team-based interactive case study. With teamwork and communication at the core of interprofessional education, students discussed the characteristics of effective teams through their own examples of teamwork before working together in small groups to review a case study. Although many students indicated that they had experience working and training as part of a team, none reported being familiar with the concept of interprofessional education. The session ended by identifying opportunities at Northeastern University for student interprofessional engagement, as we hope that this session will inspire students work and collaborate together in the future.
