John Wood: Room to Read

Please join the Social Enterprise Institute and the Boston Chapter of Room to Read, as we welcome Mr. John Wood, founder and co-board chair of Room to Read and Forbes Impact30 Social Entrepreneur on Monday, October 21st from 5:15-6:15PM at Northeastern University’s Curry Student Ballroom for his discussion, “Tenacity, Determination & Leadership: Lessons from the Front Lines of Social Change.”

Mr. Wood was a former executive at Microsoft when he traveled to the Himalayas on a mountain climbing excursion. While in the Himalayas, Mr. Wood met the principal of a small primary school which had little-to-no school supplies or books. His chance meeting with the students at this school served as the motivation for his departure from Microsoft to co-create Room to Read, an international organization that promotes girls’ education and literacy throughout Africa and Asia. Room to Read has created a dynamic model for change that has reached 7.8 million children worldwide.

At the October Lecture Series, Mr. Wood will discuss his groundbreaking work as the co-founder and visionary of Room to Read, his impetus to run his non-profit organization like a business, and the staggering results Room to Read has achieved under his leadership.

Room to Read has been featured in films such as Half the Sky and Girl Rising, on CNN, the Huffington Post, Forbes, PBS, BusinessWeek, and Cosmopolitan. The SEI will also be selling limited signed copies of Mr. Wood’s latest book, “Creating Room to Read: a Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy”.
