On May 17, 2019, the Center for Research Innovation was honored to host delegates from the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Intellectual Property Attaché Program at Northeastern’s stunning Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex.
Global reach
The USPTO attachés immerse themselves in regional offices across the globe working directly with foreign government officials to advocate for U.S. businesses and stakeholders seeking to improve IP policies, laws, and regulations abroad. The Program also serves as a resource for entrepreneurs who are seeking subject matter experts on international jurisdictions.
Northeastern on display
The CRI together with faculty innovators, Mosaic and IP CO-LAB, senior leadership, and students representing D’Amore-McKim School of Business, School of Law, and government relations showcased the many creative ways we support the entrepreneurial ecosystem at Northeastern University.
A sampling of presentations by Northeastern researchers covered core capabilities in the areas of nano technology, IoT, radio frequency, and MEMS/NEMS devices and systems. The exchange of ideas and observations from real-world practice highlighted CRI’s:
- Successes in building global patent portfolios while maneuvering regulatory requirements
- History of pairing the needs of industry partners with NU solutions through tailored approaches that mature technologies and inform research
- Proven record of spurring commercialization efforts and creating impact-generating spinouts and startup companies.
Connecting, locally and globally
Joining the CRI were the president of the Boston Patent Law Association and counsel representatives from China and Japan who partner with the CRI to protect Northeastern assets globally.
