2023 Black History Month:

Black Leaders Helping Shape Today’s History

Mission

The mission of Black History Month programming at Northeastern is:

  • To create an environment on Northeastern’s campus that promotes consciousness and societal value of individuals of the African Diaspora.
  • To provide opportunities to all campus community members by making connections, inspiring, educating, and celebrating the richness of Black History.

Black History Month was originally named Negro History Week by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson chose February because it marked the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the Black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The Black History Month program of events is produced by the Black History Month committee consisting of Northeastern faculty and staff, student groups, and the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute staff.

* Funding and support provided by the division of Student Affairs, Cultural and Spiritual Life, the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute, and the Department of African-American Studies.
