Ebola in the News

Ebola Virus Disease has dominated the headlines in the recent weeks, and is likely to remain top of mind in the days to come.  At this time, there is no indication that any individual in Massachusetts is confirmed to have Ebola.  Much care is being taken to identify any potential cases.  With cold and flu season upon us, we expect more people with flu-like symptoms to be vigilant about their symptoms such as high fever.

It is important to remember that Ebola is very difficult to contract and is spread ONLY by close contact with the bodily fluids of a person who is sick with Ebola.  It is not airborne or spread by coughing, sneezing, or sharing food.  People are only contagious if they have active symptoms.

Northeastern University’s Crisis Management Team is actively monitoring the situation.  The University has a protocol in place for the handling of infectious disease and other health emergencies.  The protocol includes preparedness for the management and care of individuals potentially exposed to or who may have illness consistent with Ebola virus disease, as well as appropriate communications, response and support for the University community as a whole.  We work closely and in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH).

If you have been in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone in the past 21 days, have plans to travel there,  or have been in contact with a person who is sick with Ebola, please call your primary care physician, or UHCS at 617-373-2772, option #2, or email [email protected] for advice on what to do
