Renewable Energy Transformation

Renewable Energy Transformation

Technology, Policy and Societal Resilience

Renewable energy is a hot topic, and one that will be the focus of a summer institute hosted by Northeastern University – Toronto. This institute, entitled Renewable Energy Transformation: Technology, Policy and Societal Resilience, explores the complex dynamics of renewable energy transformation with an emphasis on social innovations in energy systems and the interconnections among technology, policy and social change.

The institute will embrace a global perspective with a particular focus on Canada and U.S. connections, similarities and differences. The transition away from fossil fuels towards more efficient, secure and resilient renewable-based energy systems includes much more than a technological substitution; this transition also involves social, institutional and cultural change in how individuals, households, communities and organizations relate to and use energy. Social structures and policy processes that reinforce and perpetuate fossil fuel reliance will be interrogated, as will the opportunities and challenges of energy system change.

Tensions associated with systemic versus incremental change, centralized versus decentralized systems, and infrastructural lock-in versus flexibility will be explored. This institute, developed in partnership with Northeastern and the Advanced Energy Centre, MaRS Discovery District, integrates strategic programming focused on catalyzing energy innovation

“This summer institute will be a fun and engaging way to explore the exciting opportunities of energy transformation,” says Jennie Stephens, Dean’s Professor of Sustainability Science and Policy. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Advanced Energy Centre in Toronto to offer unique educational experiences for those interested in learning about energy system change and the transformation to more renewable-based energy systems.”

Designed for both experienced energy sector professionals as well as those looking to enter the dynamic energy industry, this summer institute will provide valuable integrated perspectives on social and technological innovation in energy.
