Employers Want Project Managers Skills!

Have you read a job description lately? If so, you might have noticed that hiring organizations are listing “project management” as a requirement more and more often.

According to Marina Brauch, director of market analysis at Northeastern University, over the past 12 months, project management was the most requested skill among job postings where an employer either requested or required candidates with graduate-level credentials.

“We did a lot of research and analysis as part of our groundwork before launching this program in Toronto,” says Brauch, “and certainly project management was one of the top skills that employers were looking for, along with communications skills and budgeting skills. This is true for jobs that were project-management-specific and also for jobs that don’t have ‘project manager’ in the title. These types of skills are in demand for many job titles.”

Among the top hiring sectors in the Toronto area, these types of organizations have been specifically asking for project management expertise: banking and finance; general medical and surgical hospitals; colleges, universities and professional schools; pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing; and insurance carriers.

This growing demand for professionals with up-to-date project management skills is one of the reasons why Northeastern University – Toronto is offering a master’s degree in project management. The courses within the program include Foundations of Project Management, Risk Management, Project Quality Management, Global Project Management and more. Students can choose concentrations in Clinical Trial Design; Construction Management; Geographic Information Systems; Information Security Management; Leadership; Leading and Managing Technical Projects; Organizational Communication; and Program and Portfolio Management. On average, students can complete this degree in less than two years.
