Northeastern University’s buildOn Community Team is part of the international nonprofit buildOn, working to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations. BuildOn has service programs all across the United States and has built over 1,000 schools in Haiti, Mali, Nicaragua, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Nepal!
The Northeastern Chapter spends time each month volunteering in Boston to give back and improve our community. We also partner with a local high school in Dorchester, C.A.S.H. and work with students to complete community service projects with them.
Throughout the academic year, we fundraise to send a group of our team abroad to build a school in international villages that have no access to adequate schools. These schools work to increase gender equality, adult literacy, and access to education. Money is raised through personal fundraising, group and fundraising efforts. Last summer, in May 2017, we raised over $8,700 to fund part of a school in the File Grande village in Nicaragua. We additionally sent 3 of our members there to break ground on the school (read more about this here). We are currently working to raise even more money this year and send more members on trek in Summer 2018. We are also hosting weekend volunteering events. Our meetings are Tuesdays at 6pm in 014 INV!
