Dr. Sorensen joined Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where is currently Vice President External Research and Innovation, in 2001. In his role at Vertex, Dr. Sorensen has helped to establish a new function where scientific excellence stems from partnerships and relationships, founded by his team in academia, non-profit foundations, and industry. Understanding the challenges the industry faces he leads matrixed teams to partner externally to create multidimensional relationships that on a global basis leverage experts to take on the challenges facing the Pharma industry today.
Dr Sorensen is also involved in a number of activities beyond Vertex. He serves on several immunology and infectious disease special interest review panels for NIH and has served as Chair of the review panel for TRND (Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Disease). He is on the Board of External Advisors for Boston University’s BEST program and advises for the Boston Children’s Hospital Technology Development Fund. In 2010 Dr. Sorensen was named as one of Pharma’s most influential people and later that same year he was an invited speaker at the Aspen Ideas Festival. He remains committed to the scientific community through his active membership at the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1993; Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, since 1988; the American Association of Immunologists since 1984 and the American Society of Investigative Pathology since 1983.
