Bioengineering Immersion

Boston Campus Program—July 7-19, 2024

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and work with the latest technologies in Bioengineering!

Bioengineering Immersion is an intensive, experiential, and project-based program for talented high school students who want to deepen their understanding of bioengineering and build a toolbox of technical skills. Over the course of two weeks, students will learn the basics of bioengineering and engineering design principles from our world-renowned faculty while working on cutting-edge projects, such as creating 3D cellular constructs. Students will complete labs on tissue engineering, medical implant design and testing, and biomedical circuit design. Students in this program will have visits from professionals in biotech, pharmaceutical, healthcare, and other bioengineering fields, and will be making site visits to engineering companies to see first-hand how new technologies are being used and to learn about the many career paths in the field. Previous visits have seen how Conformis makes custom total knee replacements, Mitek sports medicine creates devices for minimally invasive surgery, and AstraZeneca develops new drugs. There will also be a panel of current bioengineering students fielding questions and talking about their co-ops, courses, and campus experience.

An inside look at Bioengineering Immersion

Learning Outcomes

The Fundamentals

The basics of bioengineering and engineering design principles.

Industry

How to use the latest in computational and biodesign software (including CAD and MATLAB) to create models of human anatomy from medical image data.

Lab Techniques

Fundamental lab techniques for bio-based design, such as cell culturing for tissue engineering.

Real-World Processes

The design, analysis, and prototyping process for each type of design. These include projects in 3D printing, design and mechanical testing of bone implants, and creating circuits to measure physiological signals in humans. Project design phases will include initial needs assessments, initial and final design proposals, and fabrication of prototypes using advanced manufacturing techniques.

Entrepreneurship

Engineering entrepreneurship, including developing new ideas for commercialization, creating a proposal to develop a new innovation, and instruction on raising funds to pursue the idea.

The Bioengineering Accelerate Pre-College Program was the best preparation and exposure I have had to the field which made me further realize my passion in both biology and engineering. Beforehand, I was not fully aware of what the bioengineering field consists of but this program really showed me multiple areas of concentration through labs and discussions. Socially, I was able to make lasting connections with people globally as well as have a preview of dorm life. The Northeastern faculty and staff were also extremely helpful and helped me to adjust to the learning environment.
