We often look at communication through an organizational lens: CEO messages to x number of employees, or collaboration platforms, or networks flowing vertically and horizontally. But the reality is that communication within organizations is based on building blocks of interpersonal communication between two or more people.

Our Virtual PR Firm takes experiential learning to a new level

In this Q&A, Dr. Ed Powers, Professor of Practice and PR pro, discusses the launch of a new model for learning about PR research, strategy, and tactics: the Virtual PR Firm.

Q: What’s it all about?

Dr. Ed Powers

A: It’s the next level in experiential learning for our students. Our virtual firm looks and feels just like a small public relations agency. Through it we are integrating our public relations coursework with six-month projects covering six months for real-life clients. And the students will perform the client work using a leading marketing software tool. The purpose is to have students ready for PR jobs that are in demand in the marketplace.

Artificial Intelligence is the next big thing – should communicators care?

My answer: You bet!

Last February, CPS sponsored a Symposium on the Intersection of AI and Talent Strategy. What we learned both from experts who are tracking the trends and AI champions who are actually implementing AI initiatives is that these technologies are moving into the mainstream. Change is happening now. Some organizations, the early adopters – the so-called ‘digital natives’ – are using AI to gain competitive advantage. In contrast, the vast majority of organizations in both the private and nonprofit sectors are at the very beginning of the change curve.
