Shanyu Kates and Samantha Dube are both research assistants working with Dr. Judith Hall in the Psychology Department’s Social Interaction Lab at Northeastern University. In the lab, Samantha and Shanyu have been working on various projects involving patient-provider interaction.

Recently, Shanyu and Samantha have worked with Jessica Holloman, Program Director of Innovations in Oral Health, and Dr. Hall on a pilot study funded by Northeastern University’s Center for Advancing Teaching & Learning Through Research to investigate an experiential learning model that uses a standardized patient case as a method for testing educational interventions. Both students will be presenting, An Experiential Learning Model to Increase Students’ Cultural Competence for Effective Patient-Provider Communication, at Northeastern University’s 2016 Research, Innovation and Scholarship Expo and the 18th Annual National Patient Safety Foundation Congress in Scottsdale, AZ.


Samantha Dube is a third-year psychology major at Northeastern and is interested in criminal justice courses, as well as psychological laboratory courses of study. Ms. Dube has career aspirations of becoming a researcher professor and plans to study social psychology and policing strategies once enrolling in a doctoral degree program after graduation. Ms. Kates is a fifth-year psychology major at Northeastern and has strong interests in studying group differences and prejudice/discrimination, and plans on pursuing a doctoral degree in Social Psychology after graduation. In addition, Ms. Kates aspires to build a career in applied psychology, with a focus on underserved populations in the domains of healthcare and the workplace.
