A Note on Sequence Complexes

In some cases, species cannot be distinguished based on the FDA standard barcoding protocol because closely related species are more than 98% similar. In these cases, we refer to the taxa as a sequence complex, as defined below.

  • cpp sequence complex — mCOI sequencing has >98% identity to three species in the FDA RSSL: Lutjanus campechanus, L. purpureus and L. peru
  • gs sequence complex — mCOI sequencing has >98% identity to two species in the FDA RSSL: Lutjanus guttatus and L. synagris
  • an sequnce complex — mCOI sequencing has >98% identity to two species in the FDA RSSL: Sebastes alutus and S. norvegicus
