Six Huskies Earn All-Conference Accolades

February 5, 2013

Following a 5-2 season, the Northeastern University Rugby Football Club was recognized by the remainder of the East Coast Rugby Conference(ECRC) coaches with six All-Conference selections, all on the first team. Seniors David Tobias, Greg McInerney, Ty Taylor, and Back Captain Sebastien Voigt capped off successful collegiate careers by garnering the honors. Juniors Chris Frasier and Forward Captain Diego Maquieira rounded out the Northeastern Selections, and the two have been tabbed as captains for the spring 2013 season.

David Tobias – Well known for his non-stop motor, Tobias earned all-conference honors thanks to his relentless defensive effort and fearlessness at the breakdown. Although his work often went unrecognized, Tobias was an integral part of the Northeastern effort.

Greg McInerney– Known for being a fiery scrumhalf, McInerney came to Northeastern as a junior from Ireland and immediately made himself a mainstay of the starting XV. The epitome of McInerney’s play came in the game against UAlbany, when McInerney made the change to flanker and came away with many great tackles and a fantastic try.

Ty Taylor– The high scoring wing led Northeastern in both tries and points scored, finishing 2nd in the conference in both categories. In addition to being known for his try scoring ability, Taylor made a bone-jarring try saving tackle against UMass to seal the victory.

Sebastien Voigt– The three year captain was the most dangerous player on the field whenever he stepped up to play. Often drawing much of the attention from the defense, Voigt’s vision and agility opened up the field for his teammates and he helped put away many Northeastern tries.

Chris Frazier- The speedy forward made the all-conference first team in his first season as a No. 8. Frazier’s opened his first game as a No. 8 by scoring a hat trick in the opener against SCSU. Frazier’s athleticism has made him a tremendous asset to both the 15’s and 7’s teams and he has been tabbed as a captain for 2013.

Diego Maquieira– In his first season as Forwards Captain, Diego helped to solidify the scrum and was a force around the breakdown. He demonstrated leadership on and off the pitch this season, but the epitome of this was in the game against UAlbany wherein he showed his exemplary tackling ability and defensive knowledge of the game. Maquieira has also been voted as captain for 2013.
