Northeastern’s Spring Season Wrap-Up

Spring 2013

The late coming of spring this year forced a shorter than usual spring season for Northeastern Men’s Rugby. Despite this, the Maddogs were able to balance preparation for the Collegiate Rugby Championships with a competitive playing schedule and training¬† schedule for our 15s programs.

This winter and spring we introduced Rugby to a new crop of students. Players who have never played before came out to our early morning sessions to learn the game we all love. New players were given the opportunity to play their first game in Northeastern colors against Wentworth 1st XV.  Despite a narrow loss the game provided a bright picture for what is to come for these new ruggers.

Later in the season the Beanpot provided an opportunity for many new players. In the first game against Boston College we were able to start a number of newer, less experienced players including a couple of players coached by Coach Dave Wedge in 3rd XV at the start of the Fall season. Only 2 players on the field started last Spring and the player turnover combined with the short training window proved to much of a hurdle to overcome. In the second game Northeastern B side played BU 1st XV. a large number of these players were promoted from the Northeastern C side and showed well against strong opposition.

As we continue our final preparations for the CRC 7’s we are beginning to organize the fall of 2013. We are looking forward to a new wave of Northeastern Rugby players and seeing players learn the game and move up through the different grades in our program.
