Hurricane Jose: Buoy Capsized

Hurricane Jose paid a visit to Nahant on the weekend of September 24, 2017. The storm created significant wave action and winds. Our first Meduza smart buoy was heavily damaged during this storm. We believe that a rope snapped due to chafing. The mooring’s grip on the buoy became uneven and the strong winds were able to capsize the buoy. The antenna holder snapped and allowed water into the buoy, which became flooded.
The electronics section was heavily damaged and covered in rust.
The outer casing of the buoy, while intact, was covered in algae and seaweed. The repaired buoy has an algae-repellent coating (bottom paint) to keep it clean.
