Pre-departure Orientation

N.U.in students have three orientations throughout their participation in the program, Pre-departure Orientation, on-site orientation once students have arrived in their host countries (see the “On-Site Orientation” section for your specific program), and New Student Orientation on Northeastern’s campus in January (see Office of Student Orientation and Parent/Family Programs website for more information).

During Pre-departure Orientation (PDO), you will spend two days on Northeastern’s Boston campus participating in a program designed to introduce you to N.U.in policies and procedures, increase your familiarity with your N.U.in location, and meet your fellow N.U.in students and N.U.in staff.  Students will stay overnight in an on-campus residence hall. Towels, bedding, and meals are all provided for N.U.in students.

*N.U.in China and N.U.in Czech Republic students are not eligible to attend on this date.  Please reach out to our office with questions.

Registration will be found in the Application Status Check under the N.U.in student portal.  Registration is required, and each PDO session will fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. All students must register for PDO by May 16, 2018.

PDO is mandatory for all students living within the United States. Due to U.S. visa regulations, international students are not required to attend this on-campus orientation program and will receive information about a mandatory online orientation via email. However, international students are encouraged to attend if able to do so.

What should I bring with me to Pre-departure Orientation?

  • Photo ID for housing check-in
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Change of clothing
  • Water bottle
  • Toiletries
  • Documentation of all AP or IB score reports and transcripts for all college transfer credit (if applicable). You must bring these documents to PDO in addition to submitting the official documentation to Admissions. During PDO, you will meet your Northeastern academic advisor to review your N.U.in courses and determine if any academically necessary changes need to be made based on your AP/IB/transfer information.
  • Optional: small fan (some residence halls do not have air conditioning), athletic wear (if students would like to participate in sporting activities)

*Towels, bedding and all meals are provided for N.U.in participants during PDO.

Can I finalize my N.U.in course selection during Pre-departure Orientation?
Yes, all students will have the opportunity to meet with their academic advising teams to review their course registration for the fall. Students should bring any updated AP/IB scores or documentation with them if they wish to have their course selections changed.  All course registrations will be finalized by the end of the N.U.in add/drop period.  Students will not be permitted to change course registration once they arrive on site.

When and where do I show up the morning of Pre-departure Orientation?
Students and families should arrive between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to the designated registration areas. This is where students will be staying overnight, so please plan to drop off your bags at that time. Breakfast is also available during these times. Below are the registration areas designated for each orientation date:

Where can I park?
Students and families are able to park in the Columbus Garage located at 795 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA 02120. Attendees must print out and display the parking pass below in their windshield. If you are driving to campus, please print this parking permit and place it on your dashboard while in the Columbus Parking Garage.

Parking spaces fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that this parking pass will be valid for the first day of the orientation session only and must be printed for use before your arrival.  There is no overnight parking available during PDO.  The Boston MBTA is an excellent option for transport to campus. Students and families may take the Orange Line to the Ruggles stop or the Green Line to the Northeastern University stop.

On-campus housing is provided for N.U.in students only, and only for the first day of the orientation program. For information on places to stay in the area, please continue reading here. Please note that we are unable to accommodate early check-ins.
