Fostering Intellectual Agility through Mindfulness in the Classroom

Our goal as educators is to equip students with knowledge that they can make use of beyond our classrooms.  This requires students to learn material in flexible and adaptive ways.  While research shows that such intellectual agility is very difficult to cultivate, mindfulness practices—activities that focus one’s attention on in-the-moment experience—are associated with a host of related outcomes ranging from increased attention to enhanced creativity. Participants in this workshop will consider the rapidly-expanding body of research into mindfulness practices relevant to the learning sciences and discuss ways to adapt these practices to fit with our course content and disciplinary ways of thinking and learning.
