Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Northeastern is taking greater steps to fully secure all members of the Northeastern community by implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) services.

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi-Factor Authentication, or MFA, is an added layer of security for your Northeastern accounts and information. MFA requires users to authenticate their identity through a separate method, typically through the Duo mobile application, text message or phone call, in order to gain access to their accounts.

This additional security measure will significantly reduce the risk and potential impact of compromised accounts, as access will require a unique personal device or PIN. MFA will be added to other critical Northeastern services in the coming months.

Northeastern’s service provider for the MFA system is called Duo Security.

Why Use MFA?

You can protect your Northeastern accounts and personal information by using MFA to confirm your identity. The two-step process ensures that your accounts are completely secure and to prevent anyone other than you from accessing your accounts.

This authentication process is done using a second factor, typically via phone or separate security question or passcode. MFA will help to add additional security when logging in or performing transactions online and at Northeastern University.

Northeastern Information Technology Services (ITS) strongly recommends using MFA when using Northeastern online services. It is especially critical when accessing systems storing sensitive information or data.

Is MFA Required?

Yes. As of October 2, 2017, all VPN users will be required to use MFA in order to access the VPN.

In the weeks and months ahead, MFA will be integrated with other university services, including server logons, Banner systems, the new myNortheastern portal and more. We will inform you before MFA is added to any new service.

How Do I Enroll in MFA?

Using MFA is fast and easy, and it adds a second layer of security to all of your Northeastern accounts and information. You can access this increased security by enrolling in Northeastern’s Multi-Factor Authentication program.

The URL for enrollment is: mfareg.northeastern.edu.

NOTE: You will only need to complete this registration process once per device.
