Can I create my website on outside resources and just import it in?
No. You should develop your website on our development servers.  We have standards that must be followed to function properly on our servers.  If you have an outside vendor, you should grant them access to our development server.  We will help you to migrate your website into production when you are ready. The owner should create a ServiceNow request for any platform configuration questions before the website is created.

What are some of the reasons to create a Northeastern-associated site?
There are many reasons to create and maintain a site on the Northeastern domain. Some of the most common are:

  • A Northeastern organization site
  • A project or research initiative
  • A student group
  • An event or conference

I want to create a site for the course I am teaching, can I do that through NUWeb?
ITS recommends using Blackboard, the online learning management system at Northeastern, for primary course content. Visit the Blackboard page for information and links to further assistance. You may create a NUWeb site for supplemental course content.

How do I get started with a NUWeb site?
First you must have access to the NUWeb server. Submit a NUWeb – New account request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required) to gain access and choose your custom URL – www.northeastern.edu/[yourchoice]. Chosen site names are assigned if available.

Is there a platform I can use to build my site?
Many users are comfortable using WordPress. There are two templates available from Marketing and Communications. If you wish to use WordPress as your platform, ITS will install it – check “Yes” for WordPress when you submit your account request.

Are there other tools that would be helpful to manage my site?
For any direct file management that can’t be handled through WordPress, ITS recommends using FileZilla, a free open-source, secure FTP application for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Beyond the templates, how do I make sure my site fits with university brand standards?
Information on all web guidelines, logos, wordmarks and more is available from the MarCom website.

ITS also recommends that you ensure that the chosen theme includes responsive (mobile-ready) design. This will provide access to the most number of visitors and also fits the new Google search prioritization.

I already have a website, but I need a space to host it. Can I just request server space?
Yes, you can request only NUWeb server space by submitting a NUWeb – New account request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required) and selecting “No” for WordPress. Please note this server space is for website files served to visitors via a web browser — it is not intended for use as media storage.  To store files use one of Northeastern’s storage solutions such as OneDrive or Google Drive.

How can I add other elements to to my site?
ITS recommends using WordPress plugins. Some common elements that can be added include:

  • Forums or discussion boards – recommendations here
  • Forms – recommendations here
  • Twitter widgets – recommendations here
  • Image galleries – recommendations here
  • Analytics – for Google Analytics, follow the instructions here

Look through the WordPress plugins site to see what else is possible. To identify reliable plugins, we suggest only using plugins that have been updated within the last six months, looking through the comments/questions, and searching the web for reviews and alerts.

I’d like to host video files on my server. Is that possible?
NUWeb servers are not designed to stream or distribute large media files to many users at once. Please host your large media files on a third-party service such as YouTube or Vimeo.

I can’t request access as a student?
Student groups can create sites on the northeastern.edu domain, but the request must go through your faculty or staff advisor – please contact the Center for Student Involvement for more information about running a student group with an advisor. Individual students cannot request access to NUWeb.

Can you work with my developer?
Faculty or staff owners of the site may request technical contact(s) if you wish ITS support to work directly with them, the owner may send an email request directly to webgroup@northeastern.edu.

I’m having trouble with my site, who do I contact?
For technical assistance with or questions about a live site, go to the ServiceNow portal and fill out the Report a problem with an NUWeb Account form (sign-in may be required).

Do I need to renew my site account?
Accounts will expire after one year – all accounts are up for renewal every September. Submit a NUWeb – Account renewal request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required).

How do I take over an old NUWeb site as the new owner?
You need to submit a NUWeb – Change account owner request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required), and explain the reason for the change of account ownership.

How do I get rid of an old NUWeb site?
The account owner is the only person allowed to request removal of an account and site, and must submit a NUWeb – Account removal request through the ServiceNow portal (sign-in may be required). If the owner of the account is no longer a member of Northeastern, another faculty or staff member must contact webgroup@northeastern.edu directly.
