At the beginning of each semester, the ISSI conducts programs to ensure you have completed all U.S. documentation requirements, and provide you with information and support to ease your transition to life in the United States and at Northeastern University. At each session, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other international students, learn from shared experiences, and find any assistance you may need.
International Student Orientation consists of several components:
- Mandatory International Student Online Check-In Process
In order to comply with federal regulations, all international students holding an F-1 visa must check-in with their institution at the start of each new program of study. Failure to do so may cause you to fall out of good standing with your visa. At Northeastern University, the Check-In process is facilitated by the International Student and Scholar Institute (ISSI). Please note that if you are planning to study at Northeastern on a different nonimmigrant visa (e.g. H-1B1 visa), and have verified that it is permissible for you to study on that visa, you do not need to participate in this process.
The International Student Check-In process is operated online. The ISSI (email@example.com) will email your Northeastern student email account (@husky.neu.edu) with a link to the International Student Check-In e-form at the beginning of the academic term. Please be aware that you can only complete International Student Check-In after you have arrived to campus. International Student Check-In can be completed through a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone. You must have your passport and make note of your local address in the Boston area.
- International Student Orientation sessions (Undergraduate and Graduate, non-CPS Students)
The ISSI has scheduled an International Student Orientation program for new international students. During these sessions, we will present important and helpful information regarding various aspects of being an international student at Northeastern University. Topics will include:
a) ISSI Welcome & Overview
b) International Student Visa Regulations and Employment Topics
c) U.S. Academic and Campus Resources
d) Panel with Perspectives from Current Students
- Academic Program Orientation
These programs are planned by your academic department. Please check with the Student Service Office for details about your academic department’s new student orientation program.
INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (Not CPS Undergraduate Students):
In addition to completing the ISSI's International Student Online Check-In process, all new incoming international undergraduate students MUST register for New Student Orientation, provided by the Office of New Student Orientation and Parent Programs. Register online through your MyNEU portal. More information for registration can be found here.
If you are a US citizen living abroad, you are not required to complete the mandatory ISSI International Student Online Check-In process. You are welcome, however, to attend other sessions and events planned by the ISSI during orientation. Please visit the Orientation Schedule to see a full listing of other sessions and events.
