Policies and Procedures

Students are expected to know Northeastern’s policies and procedures and the rules and regulations that govern housing at Northeastern. If you violate a rule or policy, you are subject to disciplinary action, which may include eviction from campus housing, suspension from the University or criminal prosecution. Below are some of the most commonly asked about room policies. For a detailed outline of the policies, please refer to the Guide to Residence Hall Living.

Room Policies

Electrical appliances

Traditional and suite style accommodations: TVs, computers, radios, clocks, stereos, fans, electric razors, hair dryers and heating pads are permitted in student rooms. Air conditioners may be rented for University-owned facilities during summer. Compact refrigerators and micro-fridges are allowed only in appropriately wired halls.

The following items are not allowed in traditional and suite style accommodations: Sun lamps, space heaters, halogen lamps, electric percolators, frying pans and all other electric cooking equipment including hot plates, toaster ovens, microwave ovens, decorative lights, waterbeds and weightlifting equipment.

Apartment style accommodations: The same appliances allowed in halls, above, are permitted in apartments. In addition, apartment residents may have toaster ovens, coffee makers and microwave ovens.

Extension cords

Minimize the use of electrical cords, make sure that all cords bear the UL trademark and never plug an electrical device with a thick cord into a thinner extension cord. Do not run cords under rugs or across doorways. Do not overload extension cords.

Noise

Noise must not interfere with students’ study or sleep. Residents who encounter a persistent problem should contact their RA. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday and 1:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday.

Residential public space

Public space consists of main lobbies and common areas. It does not include floor lounges or areas inaccessible to nonresidents. Requests to use public space must be made to your RD at least one week before the desired date.

Roommate bill of rights agreement

This document outlines the basic rights and responsibilities of students living in Northeastern housing. Each resident must read and sign the agreement. Staff members will help mediate any conflicts.

Guest POlicy

  • You may have no more than three visitors signed in at a time and they may only stay in the building up to three consecutive nights in a week.
  • Any guest who is visiting the residence halls must comply with the university’s vaccination and masking requirements.
  • Roommates must work out their own arrangements for visitors; if you cannot agree, seek a staff member for help.
  • Guests must bring a photo ID along with them in order to be signed in to their residence hall. Guests are not allowed past the Proctor Station without being signed in with a valid photo ID.
