Northeastern Classified in Top Tier for ‘Highest Research Activity’

Research Research

Northeastern ranks in the “highest research activity” category among U.S. colleges and universities. It is one of only 115 accorded top tier, R-1 status by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

This distinguished ranking reflects the university’s strategic investment in high-impact, use-inspired, interdisciplinary research programs, described in our visionary strategic plan, Northeastern 2025.

External research funding in 2016-2017 rose to $140.7 million. Since 2006, the university has recruited more than 600 tenured or tenure-track faculty, emphasizing joint appointments across colleges and disciplines. Northeastern has also invested in leading-edge facilities like the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex. Opened in 2017, the complex is a magnet for academic leaders and creative collaboration among faculty and with industry in areas from robotics and cybersecurity to drug discovery.
