This DOC focuses on renewable energy in Puerto Rico. The chemistry/engineering side of the course will focus on battery electrochemistry including stoichiometry of battery reactions, charge discharge battery cycling, reversible battery failure modes and the incorporation of batteries into solar energy micro-grids. Students will visit micro-grids and participate in the design of a micro-grid tailored to a devastated site that students will visit. In addition to interacting with Puerto Ricans during site visits, guest speakers will lecture on pre-Columbian history, Spanish colonialism, and the history of Puerto Rico from 1898 to present.
