When you decide to enroll in a Dialogue of Civilizations (DOC) program, you are committing yourself to the fulfilling experience of the program, and also to a significant investment of money. Before applying to any program, please plan carefully and familiarize yourself with the withdrawal policies and charges. These policies supersede Northeastern University’s policies for withdrawal from on-campus courses.

If you decide to withdraw from a DOC program, you may incur significant fees for your withdrawal after your acceptance into the program.

DOC programs are being monitored regarding international travel and visa restrictions, CDC guidelines, and COVID-19 protocols and policies.  All DOC programs have been developed in two modalities:  in-person and virtual.  Should Northeastern determine that a DOC program cannot be delivered in-person, that program will be offered to students virtually.

If the current global health situation does not improve in a particular area and the DOC switches over to virtual, you will have a 5-day grace period to withdraw without a penaltyIf you choose to withdraw from the program outside of this grace period, for any other reason, you will be subject to the withdrawal policy, detailed below.

The Summer 2021 DOC deadlines have been extended as we continue to navigate changing travel policies and restrictions around the world. While deadline dates may change, all withdrawal fees continue to apply. You are responsible for reviewing the withdrawal policy so that you are aware of the terms and dates that apply.

Program cost

The Dialogue of Civilizations (DOC) total program cost is comprised of Northeastern tuition for 8 credits (two 4 credit courses) and an additional program fee of up to $3,500 for each in-person DOC.

  • Please refer to Student Financial Services for most accurate cost per credit.

The program fee helps cover a variety of program activities (in-person or virtual), accommodations, some meals, transportation in country, and other program components. The program fee does not cover the full cost of the program. A portion of the tuition payment subsidizes participation on the program. This is why withdrawal penalties may be greater than just the DOC program fee.

Why are there withdrawal costs?

Northeastern is contractually obligated to begin making payments to vendors and partners on behalf of the program participants in advance of the start date of the program. The withdrawal penalties are based on the timeline for payments across all DOC programs.
