READ OUR NEW REPORT ON ORGANIC FARMING IN THE NORTHEAST

NEJRC is proud to announce the release of a new report by Becca Berkey! Just Farming: An Environmental Justice Perspective on the Capacity of Grassroots Organizations to Support the Rights of Organic Farmers and Laborers looks at how justice-relaed issues (such as pay, access to housing and health care) are impacting farmers and farmworkers on organic farms in the northeastern United States. Becca also looks at the role of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) in addressing these issues. Check out the report and/or executive summary in our reports section, or by clicking here for the report and here for the executive summary.

GOALS

The New England Environmental Justice Network (EJRN) is sponsored by the New England Environmental Justice Forum and hosted by the Northeastern Environmental Justice Research Collaborative.  Formed at the 2013 New England Environmental Justice Summit, the role of EJRN is to help generate and share knowledge and information by networking and building partnerships between researchers, lower-income communities and communities of color, and environmental justice (EJ) advocates. The overall goal of EJRN is to facilitate community-driven research on environmental justice issues.  These issues range from environmental health, climate change and justice, land use policy, gentrification and housing policy, energy policy, industrial siting and permitting, transportation equity, air and water quality, community revitalization and green jobs, parks and environmental amenities, food justice, smart growth and sprawl, disaster prevention and response, chemical exposure and toxic wastes, brownfields and illegal dumping, access to public services (such as shelters), and many other challenges confronting lower-income people and people of color where they “live, work, play, and pray.”  EJRN accomplishes these objectives by acting as a conduit for matching community groups in need of research assistance with scholars, scientists, academic research centers and institutes, professional and non-professional researchers and consultants, and other organizations.

 HOW DOES EJRN WORK?

EJRN accomplishes these objectives by helping to connect community groups in need of research assistance with scholars, scientists, academic research centers and institutes, professional and non-professional researchers and consultants, and other organizations. Researchers  can also utilize the network to reach out to communities and each other.

Any organization or individual is free to join EJRN as a Research Associate.  On this website, a profile (including contact information and areas of expertise) of all the EJRN Research Associates is provided.  EJ organizations that would like to put out a “call” for research assistance may look up and contact individual researchers themselves, or send a description of their research problem and need to the EJRN Coordinator, Dr. Daniel Faber, at d.faber@neu.edu, who will then forward it along to the entire EJRN membership via a listserve e-mail notification.  It will then be up to the individual researchers to respond to this call if they are qualified and interested in doing the work.  Dr. Faber will also use the listserve to send out periodic announcements, news, updates, publications, and other information that will be of interest to New England-based EJ advocates.

In the future, EJRN may also serve to coordinate meetings, discussion groups, public talks, conferences, and other kinds of EJ-related events.  Knowledge is empowering!  Please sign up for our general listserve below and/or become a Researcher Associate today.
