2019 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award Granted to Northeastern
We are excited to announce that for the fourth year in a row, Northeastern is the proud recipient of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award! Awarded by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, the annual HEED Award is a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
As a recipient of this award, along with 92 other institutions, Northeastern has established a level of achievement and commitment to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus. The application assesses institutions in three overall areas: initiatives, programs, and outreach; student recruitment, retention and completion; and hiring practices for faculty and staff. Northeastern’s innovative diversity programs, such as the Research Leadership Development Initiative (ReDI), a leadership program for a diverse cohort of associate and early full professors who show promise for research leadership on a wider scale, and the Biotechnology A2M Scholars Program, an NSF funded program designed to support the retention and graduation of high-achieving, low-income students from underrepresented groups in biotechnology fields, demonstrate this commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
Open to all colleges and universities across the United States, the HEED Award is the only national award that honors individual institutions for being outstanding examples of colleges or universities that are committed to making diversity and inclusion a top priority across their campuses. The HEED Award not only recognizes past achievements, but also allows candidates to grow in their work and pledge to diversity and inclusion as one of the goals of the application process is to help institutions of higher education assess their diversity efforts in order to build on their success and improve where necessary. Through our programs and initiatives on diversity and inclusion, Northeastern has demonstrated excellence in developing innovators and leaders for today’s global workforce.
Look forward to the announcement of the HEED Award recipients in the November 2019 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine!
