Laura Green, Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, has been at Northeastern since 2001. She is serving as Acting Director of WGSS through AY 2017-2018 while Professor Suzanna Danuta Walters is on sabbatical. She was appointed as Department Chair of English in 2009 and served in this position until 2015. During this time, she also served on the executive board of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and recently became a jointly appointed faculty member in the WGSS program. Professor Green first began teaching women’s studies when at Yale, where she taught Introduction to Women’s Studies. She has also taught Intro to WGSS at Northeastern. In Fall 2016 she served as Acting Director of the Humanities Center, and in July of the following year, she was named Associate Dean of Teaching, Learning, and Experiential Education in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH).

Professor Green’s academic specialization is Victorian literature. She notes that the Victorian era was the first to establish higher education for women and that this resulted in a change in literature. She has enjoyed studying the reflection of this change, especially in the journals of Constance Maynard, a Victorian woman who kept seventy volumes of diaries, and who eventually founded Westfield College for women in England.

In her year as Acting Director of WGSS, Laura hopes to continue building curriculum by developing and publicizing new and interesting courses. She is looking forward to the spring Symposium, “Gender and the Rise of the Global Right”. She hopes to find new ways to bring together students with WGSS minors and to showcase the interesting work faculty and students in the program are doing.

Outside of her duties with the university, Laura is working on an article on Constance Maynard and co-editing a special issue of Narrative, the official journal of the International Society for the study of Narrative, for which she will also co-author the introduction.
