CSSH is dedicated to fostering an environment where both faculty members and students can pursue research across all of the disciplines.
Both graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to pursue financial support for their research projects. There are funding sources from CSSH as well as from other university offices, such as the Office of the Provost and the Office of the President. Click here for a list of undergraduate student research opportunities and sources of funding.
CSSH graduate students who are in good standing and who wish to apply for an external grant or fellowship opportunity should fill out the CSSH Graduate Student External Grant Form.
This form is required and allows the Dean’s Office to provide assistance with grant proposals and fellowship applications.
The CSSH Dean’s Research Development Initiative provides faculty members in CSSH with seed funding to help them develop proposals for more significant support from external sources. The external support may come in a wide variety of forms including grants, fellowships, research contracts, or research partnerships. There are two funding cycles per year.
The Northeastern Humanities Center offers several opportunities each year for research funding in the form of its resident fellowship program and collaborative research cluster grants. The Humanities Center also provides grant-writing workshops, a faculty works-in-progress colloquium series, and other opportunities for faculty members and students to exchange ideas in a collegial environment. Visit the Humanities Center website for details.
Northeastern Grant Programs in Support of Interdisciplinary Research is another source of internal funding available to CSSH faculty members and, in some instances, to graduate students. Tier 1 Grants are awarded once every fiscal year and are designed to support and encourage individual faculty members to form multidisciplinary teams with the goal of successfully competing for future sponsored research opportunities. The university’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 programs have rolling deadlines and are intended for major research initiatives ready for, or already competing, for large Federal funding opportunities. Visit Northeastern’s research website for more details about all three programs.
CSSH faculty members and graduate students applying for an external grant or fellowship should submit a completed CSSH External Grant Form to the Dean’s Office. This procedure aids in communication and gives the Dean’s Office a more accurate picture of CSSH grant activity. For questions, contact Associate Dean of Research Jack McDevitt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Northeastern University’s research website has put together a comprehensive list of federal and private funding sources, including those in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, that are available to CSSH faculty members and graduate students. Researchers should check this site regularly as the lists are updated.
Those ready to submit a proposal for an external grant should do so through COEUS, the university’s online system for developing and submitting grant proposals. Visit the Faculty and Staff Resources page for specific CSSH research policies and procedures, or contact the CSSH Grants Administrator.
