No, students who apply to the PhD program who do not have prior relevant Master’s degrees will automatically be considered for admission to the MA program if they are not admitted to the PhD program.
Yes, students currently in the MA or MPA programs at Northeastern also must formally apply for admission to the doctoral program. Admission is not guaranteed. Applicants seeking admission to the doctoral program who are currently enrolled in one of our Master’s programs must start the process by submitting the following: Internal Admission Application Notification Form.
The program does not set a formal minimum requirement for the GRE, but it must be noted that applicants scoring below the 50th percentile will be at a competitive disadvantage. We would however not dissuade anyone from applying based on GRE scores alone.
It is expected that applicants to the doctoral program will have earned a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0, or its equivalent. Master’s level applicants should have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher or its equivalent. We will review any applicant to one of our programs, but it is rare for us to admit anyone who does not meet the above criteria.
Tuition costs can be found on the Student Financial Services’ tuition and fees page.
We typically admit 5-10 students into our PhD program each fall. For our MA in Political Science we are looking to recruit a class of 30+ students each year.
PhD application decisions are made in February.
We begin making decisions on MA applicants for the fall semester in February – March. Application decisions will be made on a rolling basis through the August 1 application deadline.
