Director’s Welcome

Lori HAW

By facilitating and showcasing research collaborations, creating opportunities for extended conversations across disciplines, and supporting colleagues in producing innovative programs and events, the Northeastern Humanities Center manifests the highest ideals of university life. It is a singular privilege for me to have a window on the intellectual preoccupations of extraordinary scholars, from a vantage point where multiple intersections are visible, and with them, the possibilities for new directions and path-breaking work.

Scrolling around the pages of this website will give you a sense of the range and variety of interdisciplinary inquiries that our faculty and fellows pursue, topics from “Viral Cultures” to “By Design,” and “Whose Story?” from food to the environment to global security, considerations of aesthetics and cultural productions and the implications of all things for individual satisfaction, social welfare, and global citizenship. In the Humanities Center, we worry over meaning—what it means to be human, humane and inhumane—we delight in stories and struggle to define beauty, and we work to open spaces that permit vulnerability, listening, thinking, and learning so as to further the best benefits of a liberal education.

It is also a privilege to work with a visionary faculty advisory board, appointed by Uta Poiger, Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, to refine our mission and develop and implement processes to fulfill that mission efficiently and fairly.  Special thanks to the CSSH, the Dean and her office, to Sari Altschuler, Associate Director of the Humanities Center, and Ignacio Chaparro, who is a patient, cheerful, effective, and reliable administrator.

Please participate in the Humanities Center’s programs.  Advance research by attending the faculty works-in-progress series, and discover and avail yourself of the opportunities that the Center affords.

Please do be in touch.  We welcome your ideas and support.
