Artist-in-Residence receives “Living Legend of Poetry Award”

Askia ToureOn Saturday, August 23, 2014, Askia Toure, an artist in the the department’s Master Artists-in-Residence Program, received the 2014 ” Living Legend of Poetry Award” from Philadelphia’s Black Writers Museum. Previous winners include poets Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez and, poet-publisher, Haki Madhubuti.

The program was held at Germantown’s historic Vernon Park. Askia was introduced to an audience of educators, artists, activists, musicians and political leaders by poet-professor and activist, Ms. Sonia Sanchez.

Askia will also receive the 2014 “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Pen-Oakland,on Saturday, December 6, 2014.
