NU|ACES Student, 2017-2018
Ryan Drew is a first year Computer Science major from North Andover, Massachusetts. Wanting to be an active participant in his new community in Boston, Ryan decided to apply to join NU|ACES. “I love being engaged with whatever community I’m surrounded by, “ he said. “The city of Boston has a huge and really interesting and diverse community unlike any other I’d ever been a part of, and I really wanted to get to know it more”.
Ryan has a very diverse selection of interests. Besides being in ACES, Ryan is also a member of a Northeastern a Capella group, Distilled Harmony. Additionally, he is also passionate about making change through government. “I was the treasurer of my class during high school, and am now on the Student Involvement Board here at Northeastern, which is a part of the Student Government Association that helps new student groups find a place on campus,” he said.
Looking forward to the year ahead, Ryan hopes to get involved in undergraduate research, focusing on combining computer and environmental science. “I want to do research professionally once I graduate, and the chance to work with the professors here would be an amazing opportunity,” he said. “Although computer science doesn’t seem like a research heavy field at first glance, it actually has a ton of opportunities to get involved with”.
For Ryan, civic engagement is about participation and striving to make the community a better place.”Someone who is civically engaged understands the diverse population of the city, actively helps the parts of the city which need it most, and engages themself with the city’s politics,” he said.
