Katelyn Keen is a 2nd year architecture major from Laguna Beach, CA. She was inspired to become a NU|ACES Team Leader after her freshman experience with the Civic Engagement Program (CEP). “I have first-hand experience of the reciprocal benefits from engaging in the greater Boston community,” she said. “I am really excited about the opportunity to share my insight with incoming ACES students and hopefully ignite their passion for community engagement.”

With passions in feminism and female empowerment, she dedicates much of her time with the program Strong Women Strong Girls, a mentoring organization for Boston Public School girls in grades 3 to 5. “I am an advocate for mutual cycles of empowerment, breaking the glass ceiling, and closing the gender pay gap,” Katelyn said.

When asked what community service means to her, she said: “Community service to me doesn’t mean ‘giving back’. Community service is better defined as engaging with communities to learn about their strengths and weaknesses. I think the best way to interact with communities in a meaningful way is to get involved with an established non-profit in the area and volunteer my time in order to contribute to the successful service efforts of people in that area.”
