A little more about us
The Center of Community Service (CCS) is a department of the Office of City and Community Affairs at Northeastern University. We facilitate diverse service opportunities for students, staff and faculty to collaborate with local and global communities in an effort to meet mutual goals.
We opened our doors in 1998 and have since been focusing on building mutually beneficial partnerships between Northeastern and its surrounding neighborhoods. We work to connect hundreds of local community organizations, schools and social service agencies to students, staff and faculty across the institution. We run service programs ranging from one day to one week through one year or more. We use an asset based approach in our work with local and global communities. Learn more about that by watching our video here!
You can stop by and visit us in the Curry Student Center, Room 172. Our main office for our semester and year-long programs is located in the Huntington Avenue YMCA – Northeastern’s very first building. Tracing our roots even further back, we recognize the territory on which our building and the Northeastern campus stand as that of The Wampanoag and The Massachusett People.
Northeastern’s CCS appears annually on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, is a proud member of the Campus Compact for Southern New England, and was chosen in 2016 as a NASPA Lead Initiative Campus. CCS has also contributed significantly to Northeastern being designated a Carnegie Community Engagement classified campus in 2015 and an Ashoka Changemaker Campus. Our Service-Learning Program has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top service-learning programs in the country 8 years in a row!
We are proud of our university’s history of community engagement, and plan to continue engaging with our neighbors in Roxbury, Fenway, Mission Hill, the South End, as well as communities across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the country and the globe.
