RvB: Battle for the Ages

This past Saturday, 9/23, Northeastern’s Swim Club held its first meet of the Fall 2017 season. In our very own Barletta Natatorium our squad was pitted against eachother in a fun Red versus Black meet. With Coach Alice Renaud heading the Black Team and Coach Kip Darmody heading the Red Team, it was clear it would be a close meet. This was a great opportunity to get back into the swing of things, with many swimmers racing for the first time since Nationals in April. There were plenty of standout swims on both teams and with the first place in the 200 Medley Relay going to the Red team for women and Black Team for the men, it was clear the meet would be hard fought. Maddie Wolf took home gold in the 200 freestyle with an impressive 2:08.98, followed closely by both Sam Pinkes (2:10.29) and Hannah Boyce (2:15.37). The meet started getting very close when Gabby Monasterio, Megan Foley, and Basia Tou of the Red Team placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 100 IM. Additonally, in the Men’s 50 freestyle, Artem Movchan took home 1st place with an impressive 22.61, followed closely by freshman Andrew Schmitt (23.16) and graduate student, Kevin Gell (23.95). As the meet progessed, there were many qualifications for Nationals, including (but not limited to) Matthew Dottinger in the 100 backstroke (58.64), freshman Kara Gilbert in the 50 freestyle (27.02), freshman Shannon Linsey in the 100 butterfly (1:07.26), and Kevin Gell in the 100 freestyle (52.04). There were many touch-outs, where it was too hard to see with the naked eye. In the last event, the Mixed 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the Red Team of Shannon Linsey, Henry Gridley, Allison Noble, and Artem Movchan  (1:43.23) just barely touched out the Black Team of Maddie Wolf, Sam Lichy, Sam Pinkes, and WenQin Chen (1:43.66). In the end, the Black Team beat the Red Team with 986 points and 747 points respectively. It was a hard fought battle, but we owe our congratulations to Coach Alice and her hard working team. With one meet under our belt, NUSC is looking forward to the rest of our season.
