The annual Spring 2017 Distance RWB Meet was held this past Saturday, February 4, and the NUSC women showed up with a number of fast swims and Nationals cuts. Newcomer Sarah Niemi and veterans Basia Tou, Alice Renaud, and Sydney Formica, started off the meet with a strong 800 freestyle relay, and freshmen Gabby Monasterio (5:26.35) and Serena DeLiberti (5:44.03) swam impressive 400 IM times.

Freshmen Allison Noble placed first in the 200 back with a time of 2:25.93, closely followed by Gabby Monasterio with a 2:28.6. Middler butterfly specialist, Casey Abel, had a great 50 butterfly, claiming first with a 28.58, in addition to being the only girl to swim the 200 fly at this meet.

Megan Foley and Sarah Niemi had great 50 fly swims going sub-30, 29.34 and 29.74 respectively, both of them qualifying for Nationals. The women's 200 freestyle relay race was extremely close, with Black Team (Alice Renaud, Basia Tou, Veditha Regulapati, Caroline Miller) out-touching Red Team (Carolyn Banak, Lissy Angotti, Katie Armstrong, Dana Bogatko) by a mere 0.04 seconds. The 200 breaststroke event was also competitive; sophomore Ava Asai-Sarris, sophomore Allison Bloom, and middler Maya Philbrick placed 1,2,3 with times within a second of each other (2:52.19, 2:52.37, 2:53.47).

Newcomer Caroline Miller had an incredible meet, qualifying for Nationals in the 200 back, 50 free, and 50 back. Freshman Katie Armstrong had a strong 50 free, swimming a 26.46, and Alice Renaud placed second with a 26.74. Monasterio claimed first in the 50 back with a 31.85, followed by Caroline Miller, Megan Foley, and Hanalei Fong. Middlers Alice Renaud and Maya Philbrick swam impressive 500 freestyles, and freshman Allison Noble asserted her long-course dominance and negative-split her first 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:47.22.

Overall the NUSC girls had a notable first meet and the new freshmen showed great spirit and energy. We are excited to see even more impressive times at our next meet at Rutgers University. Go Huskies! -Hanalei Fong, SID
