In this section, we outline the methods we used to implement the program on construction worksites. The program can be adapted to sites of varying sizes, management structures, and phase of construction. In this section, we provide recommendations and guidelines so you can successfully match the program to the needs of your site.  No matter the site, the fundamental concepts of the program remain the same:

  • Frequent and comprehensive site safety assessments
  • Regular communication of safety performance to workers and foremen
  • Recognition of whole site when safety threshold is met or exceeded
Overview of considerations for your site:
  • Conducted at least once per week, with timely reporting of feedback;
  • Comprehensive, targeting both safe and unsafe working conditions and practices
  • Used to generate a weekly whole-site safety score Click Here to Learn More
  • The safety assessment threshold score is generated before the program begins and uses past data from the Owner or General Contractor’s previous sites of similar size and scope.
  •  The threshold score is the median monthly score from these projects from the last year.
  • For more details on how to find the data and how to calculate the score, Click Here
  • Workers should be introduced to the program within their first few days on-site.  We recommend that this introduction is held during a new worker safety orientation or equivalent Click Here to Learn More
  • Track the site’s safety performance score on a centrally located poster following each site safety assessment
    • Post subcontractor-specific scores
  • Provide foremen with their company’s latest safety assessment observations at weekly meetings
  • Increase program visibility through hardhat stickers, banners, t-shirts,  and regular announcements of site safety scores Click Here to Learn More
  • Our suggestion: 1-2 months of weekly safety assessments
  • Recognize the whole site if the cumulative site safety performance score exceeds the threshold after this set amount of time Click Here to Learn More
  • Should serve as meaningful social recognition
  • Our suggestion: group recognition through a free lunch and raffle for a “high value” item such as a monthly parking pass at a lot near the work-site for urban worksites or a gift card
  • Certificates that recognize foremen provide additional value Click Here to Learn More
