Inside Silicon Valley: November 2018

Dean's Corner

Dear Students, Faculty and Partners,

This year, we are excited to announce our third year anniversary.  Our Silicon Valley campus has grown significantly since our launch in 2015, and we haven’t done it alone.

Officially opening in Fall 2015, Northeastern University Silicon Valley is based on a distinctive new model for higher education: educational hubs embedded directly in select companies across the Bay Area that offer sector-specific degree programs and research collaborations to benefit the entire region.  This is a powerful way to boost workforce talent and promote innovation in high-growth sectors of regional economies.

We want to take this opportunity to thank local community members, Northeastern alumni, industry-aligned faculty, and eager and engaged students for your tremendous support.  To celebrate this important milestone, we will be hosting our third anniversary party on-campus on November 16.  We hope you could join us and we look forward to meeting all of you.

Exploring “Technical Innovation and Product Prototyping” in Silicon Valley

Last October, Northeastern University Professor Bala Maheswaran of the College of Engineering led a five-week-long Dialogue of Civilizations program, titled, “Technical Innovation and Product Prototyping” in San Jose, CA. The program explored the customer-driven market, technology innovation, and rapid product prototyping via experiential and interactive team-based, skill- and knowledge-integrated approaches using real-world situations.

The dialogue offered two courses on customer-driven technical innovation and product prototyping, which included activities, such as, visits to several established and start-up companies, visits to Tech Innovation and Company Museums, listening numerous guest seminars by Silicon Valley companies, customer interviews, and social events. Students were required to present a case study on Silicon Valley companies, their failure and success stories, proposals for projects to the company guests, designing, building and presenting prototypes, and write project reports. Learning about Silicon Valley start-up and large corporation culture provides valuable opportunities for education, research and professional careers for Northeastern University students.
