Mentoring is a great way to stay connected with the university while helping to shape a current student’s co-op experience. This program, developed by the Office of Alumni Relations and Co-op Connections, makes it easy for you to make a strong connection with a student in your city.

Fall 2017 Applications are now closed.

Applications for the Spring 2018 cycle will open in January 2018. If you have any questions about getting involved, email Meg Andrews at m.andrews@northeastern.edu

“Northeastern alumni make so many things possible for students. I’ve had such a great experience working with an alumni mentor on my current co-op. He has been able to help me navigate my new job and make important connections. ” – Greg Berson, SSH’16

“This is a hugely valuable program, and I appreciated the opportunity to meet people who are experts in their field.” – Margarita Kefalas, DMSB’17

  • How much time should I dedicate to this program?

One of the great things about this program is that it is flexible. In other words, you and your mentor or mentee will determine how your relationship will work and how often you want to meet. Below are some of the guidelines and best practices that will help ensure a successful relationship.

    1. Complete the Mentor Agreement with you mentee at the beginning of the program to determine expectations, availability, and preferred methods of communication.
    2. Maintain regular contact (aim for twice a month) with your mentee
    3. Attend Kickoff Event, Wrap Dinner, and other community events in your region together
    4. Educate your mentee about your industry and city and prepare him/her to compete successfully in the job market
    5. Listen to the needs and expectations of your mentee
    6. Expose your mentee to the challenges, rewards, and outlooks of companies and career paths.
    7. Work with your student to establish realistic and obtainable goals, both personal and professional
    8. Consider inviting your mentee to visit your office to expose him/her to different company cultures or environments
    9. Teach networking skills that can be applied in multiple settings
    10. Be yourself, be flexible, be respectful, and encourage your mentee to do the same
