Craft breweries are all the rage, with innovative techniques and entrepreneurial spirit playing a huge role in the success of these exciting start-ups.

Beyond the Brew, a series of events that began in fall 2015, not only caters to attendees’ love of beer, but educates them about the science, sustainability, and business acumen needed to manufacture and market a successful product. Join fellow members of the Northeastern community for these informative presentations and get a chance to sample some of the best craft beers around.

Beyond the Brew: Portsmouth Brewery
5:00 p.m. | 56 Market Street, Portsmouth, NH

Experience some of Portsmouth’s best brews with the Northeastern community at Portsmouth Brewery on September 14. The evening will feature a brewer-led talk about the brewery and beer-making process and will be filled with great craft beer, food, and games! 

Registration is $10 per person and includes 2 craft beer tickets and appetizers. Must be 21+ to attend.

Beyond the Vine: Napa Valley
9:00 a.m. | 1233 Polk St., San Francisco, CA

Tour Napa Valley and enjoy a leisurely day of wine tastings with your fellow Northeastern community members! Hop onboard our bus departing from Mayes Oyster House in Nob Hill and travel through the scenic valley, stopping for lunch and tastings at two of Napa’s most iconic wineries.

Registration is $75 per person and includes transportation to and from San Francisco, guided tour, wine tastings at 2 wineries, and lunch. Must be 21+ to attend.

Beyond the Vine: Malibu
10:00 a.m. | 395 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA

Join us for a beautiful day along the coast and into Malibu’s Wine Country. This all-inclusive trip includes luxury transportation from Santa Monica, wine tastings at three local wineries, plus a delicious lunch (with wine, of course), at one of Malibu’s finest restaurants by the Pacific. Just show up, sit back, and let us worry about everything else.

Registration is $75 per person and includes transportation to and from Santa Monica, wine tastings at 3 wineries, and lunch. Must be 21+ to attend.

Beyond the Vine: La Jolla Food & Wine Walking Tour 
2:00 p.m. | 7766 Fay Ave., La Jolla, CA

Northeastern wine lovers unite! Enjoy a leisurely walk by the ocean while being entertained by the history and culture of La Jolla by-the-sea. This food and wine walking tour is a great way to discover hidden gems in La Jolla and sample some of the best restaurants and wine bars in the area.

Registration is $45 per person and includes wine and food pairings at 2 stops along a leisurely 1-mile walk. Must be 21+ to attend.

Boxing & Brews
2:00 p.m. | Assembly Row, Somerville, MA

Join your fellow huskies for a challenging workout at Title Boxing Club this September! Title Boxing Club is a full-body boxing workout that charges your body, clears your mind, and completely engages your spirit.

Following the workout, join us for craft beer and snacks at Slumbrew’s Assembly Row Beer Garden, located just down the street. What better way to reward yourself after all of your hard work than with a refreshing Happy Sol or Summer Shandy!

Registration is $15 per person and includes fitness class, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and (1) craft beer. Must be 21+ to attend.

Join us on November 16 to brew your very own batch of craft beer from start to finish just in time to wow your family and friends for the holidays.

Registration is $60 per person and includes beer-making class instruction and materials (plus finished, bottled beer after 2-3 weeks), farm to table heavy appetizers, and one (1) Hopster draft beer. Must be 21+ to attend.

    Somerville, Massachusetts
    The kick-off event of the Beyond the Brew series was hosted at one of the Boston area’s most innovative breweries; Aeronaut! The event featured talks on innovation and science by the founders of the brewery, craft beer tastings, bar snacks, games, and more!

    Miramar, California
    Members of the San Diego community enjoyed a night of networking over beer and dinner at Ballast Point Brewery. The new state-of-the-art Miramar location features two giant copper kettles discovered in a brewery in Lohr, Germany, an innovation lab, tasting bar, and restaurant.

    This event represented our take on a traditional Oktoberfest beer tasting event! The Northeastern community enjoyed Bavarian-inspired fare, live music, and tastings from local craft breweries including Mayflower Brewing Company, Mystic Brewery, and Jack’s Abby.

    The founders of several local breweries discussed the business side of starting and owning a craft brewery, moderated by Northeastern professor Ted Clark. Represented breweries included Mayflower Brewing Co., Downeast Cider House, and Medford Brewing Co.

    Denver, Colorado
    Northeastern alumni, parents, and friends living in the Denver area got together for a yoga class inside Alpine Dog Brewery. After class, guests had the chance to sample Alpine Dog signature brews like Bourbon Barrel Peach Pale Ale and Liquid Pancakes.

    Escondido, California
    Members of the San Diego community gathered at Stone Brewing Co. for a guided beer tasting with locally-sourced appetizers on the breathtaking balcony. Guests were even surprised with an impromptu tour led by an alumna who is currently working as a microbiologist for Stone.

    Newton, Massachusetts
    Boston-area alumni gathered at Hopsters in Newton for a full hands-on beer making experience. Attendees brewed their own batch of craft beer in small groups, indulged in some great farm-to-table fare and enjoyed getting to know one another. Following the event, everyone got to take home the beer they brewed!

    Boston, Massachusetts
    Craft breweries and other craft beverage companies are popping up all over Massachusetts! On 6/29 the Northeastern Community had the chance to taste offerings from two newcomers in the craft beverage market – Bent Water Brewing and Nauti Seltzer as well as some new brews from the old favorite – Berkshire Brewing. This on-campus social event was co-hosted by alumni-owned Huntington Wine & Spirits and Rubi’s Hot Dogs.

    Washington DC
    Guests experienced some of the best craft beer DC has to offer with inventive and inspired brews from Blue Jacket Brewey. This wasn’t a typical beer tasting, but instead the brilliant minds at Blue Jacket and their restaurant, The Arsenal, walked attendees through pairing craft beer with delectable desserts! Move over wine, there’s a new dessert beverage in town!

    Who says September has to signal the end of summer weather? Attendees gathered at Redhook Brewery for a quintessential summer backyard barbecue featuring bbq fare, signature Redhook craft brews, live music, and games all with the ambiance of the outdoor patio and gardens!

    Los Angeles, CA
    Beyond the Brew debuted in Los Angeles this fall at Angel City Brewery where brewers were onsite playing eclectic jams from their personal collections. The Northeastern community mixed and mingled over great beer and local Mexican fare.

    Northeastern craft beer lovers celebrated Homecoming in style with tastings from some of Boston’s newest local brewers! Featured breweries all opened in the last year and included Bone Up Brewing Co.Lamplighter Brewing Co.Merrimack Ales, and Winter Hill Brewing Co.
