Continuing Research in Puerto Rico

A research group headed by Akram Alshawabkeh, Professor of Civil and Environmental engineering, just received 13.2 million dollars in funding through the NIH program Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes.   David Kaeli and Thomas Sheahan of the College of Engineering; Roger Giese, Justin Manjourides, and Emily Zimmerman of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences; and Phil Brown, who holds joint appointments in Bouvé and the College of Social Sciences and Humanities are also members of the team.  The group is studying environmental impact on the health of women, infants, and children in Puerto Rico, and this funding will help them continue their work, like their efforts to lower the rate of preterm births, already down from 20% to 12%, but still high in global rankings.
