Patching the Holes

Associate Professor of Computer and Information Sciences, Alan Mislove is one of ten recipients of grants offered by Facebook to those able to help patch their security breaches.  Mislove became involved with Facebook's efforts after he and his grad student, Giridhari Venkatadri, published their findings showing how hackers were able to access user's cellphone numbers through their custom advertising.  Finding and patching the holes that allow phone numbers to be obtained, Mislove explains, is crucial to maintaining personal security as having a person's phone number leaves them vulnerable to attacks on their entire phone, where many of us now store vital personal and financial information.  With this new grant, Mislove hopes to help Facebook find more permanent solutions to these security issues and make the social media site safer for all users.
