University Leadership

Northeastern is a force for change, forever pushing higher education to stay ahead of the world’s evolving needs. The university’s leaders, too, are drivers of change, inspiring their teams to make the university better every day.

Senior Vice Provost and Chief Inclusion Officer

As senior vice provost and chief inclusion officer, Karl Reid leads the coordination, development, and implementation of the university’s strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while promoting a culture of success for all members of the university community.

Reid comes to Northeastern from the National Society of Black Engineers, where he served as executive director for seven years. He directed the NSBE world headquarters team, managing relations with 22,000 members from around the world and more than 60 global strategic partners. He led the development and execution of NSBE’s 2025 strategic plan and co-founded the 50k Coalition, a national effort to produce 50,000 diverse engineering graduates annually.

Prior to his work at NSBE, Reid was the senior vice president for research, innovation, and member college engagement at the United Negro College Fund. In that capacity, he helped establish a $25 million grant program for the organization’s 37 historically black colleges and universities. He also spent 10 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he rose to the position of associate dean of undergraduate education and assistant to the chancellor for diversity.

A long-time advocate for increasing college access for low-income and minority students and a certified diversity professional, Reid currently serves on the Committee on Addressing the Under representation of Women of Color in Tech for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He is also a member of the Advisory Council for the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

His book, Working Smarter, Not Just Harder: Three Sensible Strategies for Succeeding in College…and Life, has become a staple for first-year students at many colleges and universities.

Reid holds a EdD from Harvard University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in materials science and engineering from MIT.
