Huskies Win National Championship

Huskies Receive National Tournament Bid!

Northeastern has received a bid for the national tournament for the second consecutive season. This year’s national tournament will take place in Blaine, Minnesota at the Schwan Super Rink. Northeastern will go into the tournament as the number 1 seed from the East followed by DVCHC Champion, University of Delaware, and the NEWCHL Runner Up, University of Vermont. From the West, defending National Champion, Rainy River Community College will return to defend its title, College of St. Scholastica, who the Huskies played in arguably one of the best games in Northeastern program history at last year’s national tournament, and finally, South Dakota State University who is back at the tournament for the second time in three years.

Huskies Win the NEWCHL!

For the first time in the Northeastern’s history, they have won the North East Women’s Collegiate Hockey League. The Huskies traveled to Bates College for a weekend tournament including the top four teams of the regular season standings. Northeastern went in as the top seed after completing an undefeated regular NEWCHL season. The second seed was University of Vermont, third was Bates College, and the fourth seed was University of Connecticut.

Northeastern’s semi final opponent was the Huskies out of University of Connecticut. NU rolled over the competition 9-0 with the offense led by Meredith Harclerode who has a goal and two assists on the night. Rounding out the scoring was Michelle Crisp, Megan Winters, Mckenzie Powers, Hannah Berry, and Vanessa Tomchik, all with two points on the night. Kelly Morris stopped all 11 shots for her 3rd shutout of the season, leading the Huskies into Sunday’s league championship game.

The Huskies sought revenge against a talented University of Vermont in the championship game after losing to Vermont in last year’s championship in the 8th round of a shootout. Northeastern exacted that revenge with a 6-0 steam rolling of Vermont, extending their winning streak to 23 straight wins this season. Mady Bilodeau got the Huskies on the board first with only minutes left in the first walking through the Catamount defense and putting a flashy deke on Vermont goaltender Kelsey Preston. Harclerode added to the lead in the first minute of the second and the Huskies started rolling. Another goal from Harclerode and Bilodeau, one from Mckenzie Powers, and one from Christine Fuchs finished off Vermont’s title hopes and clinched the victory for Northeastern. NU goaltender Chelsea Dietz notched another shutout, her third in a row against Vermont, and her ACHA Division 2 National leading 6th of the season.

Huskies Sweep Vermont, Close in on National Tournament Berth.

Northeastern continued their winning ways with a weekend sweep of #3 University of Vermont with two 5-0 wins. In Saturday’s tilt, the Huskies came out of the gate flying with a three goal first period off of goals from Charlotte Jones, Christine Fuchs, and Hannah Berry. In the second period, Vermont matched NU’s intensity that resulted in a scoreless period, but Vermont was no match for Northeastern’s depth as Huskies Mckenzie Powers and Meredith Harclerode put the Catamounts away with two more goals late in the Third.

On Sunday, Northeastern played the spoiler in Vermont’s Senior Game, again beating the Catamounts 5-0. The Huskies were led by two goals from Shannon Kelleher, and a goal and an assist from Hannah Berry and Christine Fuchs. Defenseman, Savannah Riley added a goal, and Charlotte Jones and Mady Bilodeau rounded out the scoring with an assist each. Chelsea Dietz added another shutout to her nation leading total that now stands at five.

Huskies Sweep Season Series with MIT and Mt Holyoke

The Huskies kept their record perfect after playing two tough games against their rival across the Charles River, MIT. MIT came to Northeastern on Friday and played Northeastern to a tough 3-1 game. MIT came to play and had the Huskies at 1-1 going into the second, but Mady Bilodeau and Savannah Riley put Northeastern on top for good to lock up the win. On Thursday, the Huskies travelled over to MIT to complete the sweep in a 5-1 effort. Alex Charest played a strong game in net notching the win, shutting the door on MIT to lock down the second consecutive season series sweep.

Saturday, Northeastern continued league play with a convincing 14-0 win over Mt. Holyoke College. Meredith Harclerode, Mckenzie Powers, and Hannah Berry all picked up 4 points in the win, followed by 3 points from Lauren Mormino. Northeastern had 9 different goal scorers, and 14 different players tallying at least a point. Kelly Morris and Chelsea Dietz combined for the shut out.

This coming weekend the Huskies travel to Burlington, Vermont to battle NEWCHL rival University of Vermont in what could be a preview of the NEWCHL championship game in 2 weeks. Earlier in the season, Northeastern got the better of UVM in a 3-1 win at Matthews Arena.

 

Northeastern #1 in the Polls for 6th Straight Ranking

The Huskies have been ranked number 1 in the Division 2 East Poll for the sixth straight ranking period, second of this season. Sporting an 11-0-0 ACHA record so far this year, the Huskies received 4 of 5 first place votes and are followed by University of Delaware in second with 1 first place vote, and University of Vermont and California University of Pennsylvania tied in the third spot. Nationals this year have been named to be held in Blaine, Minnesota from March 12th to March 15th with the top 3 teams from the east squaring off against the top 3 teams from a very competitive west, currently being led by University of Minnesota Duluth, South Dakota State University, and last year’s national tournament west bids, the College of St. Scholastica and Rainy River Community College tie for third in the second ranking.

 

Northeastern Sweeps ACHA Divsion One Team

The Huskies swept the two game weekend against ACHA Division One UMass Amherst. It was the first meeting since last year’s 7-1 loss to UMass. On Saturday, the Huskies travelled to the Mullins Center at UMass and earned a 6-1 victory. Mady Bilodeau and Mckenzie Powers scored two goals in the first two minutes of play forcing UMass to use their time out very early into the game. Towards the end of the first Karoline Perdios put the Huskies up 3-0, a lead which they took into the break. Early in the second period Steph Schlosky breathed some life into UMass scoring a Power Play goal, but the Huskies answered back with two more goals in the second from Hannah Berry and Meredith Harclerode, and Mady Bilodeau finished the game off with her second goal of the game with less than two minutes remain in the third off of some fancy passing from her linemate Christine Fuchs.

On Sunday UMass travelled out to Matthews Arena for the second of the two game set where the Huskies again came out victorious with a 3-0 win. UMass carried the play for the first half of the first period but a power play goal from Christine Fuchs proved to be the momentum swing that the Huskies desperately needed. It was a defensive struggle from that point until midway through the third period where Mckenzie Powers struck for the second time of the weekend, deflating the UMass attack. Karoline Perdios rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal with just over a minute left to seal the game for the Huskies. Chelsea Dietz notched 18 saves and added another shutout to her nation leading total of three.

The Huskies finish the first semester with a 13-0 record and an amazing 91 goals for and 2 goals against. The 92 goals for are due in part to the Huskies having five players, including Mckenzie Powers, Christine Fuchs, Lauren Mormino, Megan Winters, and Hannah Berry, in the top ten of the nation’s scoring totals, and the unbelievable goals against total is due to their tenacious defense and goaltending, all three of which are top three goaltenders in the nation as far as Goals Against Average, Save Percentage, and Shutouts with Dietz leading the way with three, and Alex Charest and Kelly Morris notching two each for a share of second in the nation.

The Huskies have a competitive second semester schedule in their quest for a National Tournament berth including a showcase tournament at Bates College, a meeting with last season’s fourth place finisher at the National Tournament, University of Pennsylvania, and a two game series at NEWCHL rival, University of Vermont.

NU Ranked #1 in the East

The Northeastern Huskies got ranked #1 in the east for Division 2 with 5 votes to none. Followed behind them and tied for second is league rival University of Vermont and DVCHL leader University of Delaware. Huskies Sweep Weekend with Bates

The huskies took on Bates twice this weekend beating them up in Maine and home in Boston. The huskies tallied 20 goals for between the 2 games and 0 goals against. Kelly Morris and Chelsea Dietz both got a shutout. Points came form accross the board. The team will take a week off and return after Thanksgiving for a home and home with UMass Amherst.

NU defeats cross-town rival Harvard

The NU Huskies and the Harvard Crimson have a lot in common being in such a great city of Boston, but when it comes to the ice, the two teams set aside there similarities and are prepared to compete. Fortunatly the huskies came out on top with an 8-2 win. Karoline Perdios scored a record game high of 4 goals in one game. Goals were also scored by Meredith Harclerode and Mckenzie Powers.

The huskies take on Bates for the first time this season, with a home and home series this Saturday and Sunday.

Huskies Dominate Three Game Weekend

The Huskies came out with three big wins this weekend with NEWCHL league games against the University of Connecticut, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. The Huskies continue to sweep the NEWCHL league to gain the number one spot in the league after playing 6 games this season. 

Friday night the Huskies traveled to play their second game against the University of Connecticut Huskies. Northeastern had points across the lines to take home the 10–0 victory. Saturday the Huskies continued on the road to Mount Holyoke College. Another team effort by the Huskies they were able to grab a 14–0 win on the road. Back at home the Huskies took on Smith College for a second re-match this season. Northeastern was able to seal the weekend with a 9–0 win against Smith. Each goalie, Chelsea Dietz, Kelly Morris, and Alex Charest gained shutout wins this weekend.

Huskies Top UVM and Smith

The Huskies took on league rival University of Vermont on Saturday. After being down 1-0 going into the second period, the huskies didn't give up. With goals from Christine Fuchs and Mckenzie Powers in the second, the huskies were able to gain the lead. Through lots of physical play, Powers was able to add a third goal to the scoreboard sealing the huskies win at 3-1.

Sunday, the huskies traveled to Smith to play a competitive game. Freshman Minnesota native Hannah Berry noted 3 goals and 1 assist. McKenzie Powers scored 2 goals and had 1 assist. Christine Fuchs and Megan Winters both greatly contributed with 1 goal and 3 assists. Charest and Morris split time for the shutout

Overall 17 huskies marked points contributing to the huskies successful weekend.

Huskies Sweep Opening Weekend

The Huskies opened up their season with two wins this past weekend, picking up where the left last season off with wins over NEWCHL league foe University of Connecticut and Plymouth State University, an NCAA Division 3 Varsity program.

The Huskies dominated UConn from the start scoring 6 goals in the first period of the game. In the final two frames they rounded out the scoring, getting a decisive 13-0 victory on home ice. Mckenzie Powers scored a team high 5 points with 3 goals and 2 assists keeping to form from last year’s impressive totals.

Halloween marked a Northeastern Club Hockey first where the Huskies took on ECAC East member, Plymouth State University. It was the first time that the Huskies have played an NCAA Varsity program in the club’s history. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies exploded in the second scoring 5 goals, then finishing the game off in the third earning a 7-0 final. Chelsea Dietz gained her second shutout in as many games and the scoring was led by Karoline Perdios with a goal and 3 assists, Meredith Harclerode with 2 goals, freshman Lauren Mormino with 2 assists, defenseman Christina Pagano with 2 assists, and Mckenzie Powers adding two more assists. Excellent efforts on the penalty kill from Mandy LaPorta and Shannon Kelleher kept Plymouth State’s power play at bay.

2009-2010 Team Picked

The huskies had tryouts for the 2009-2010 season Thursday September 17th and Friday September 18th. The team had a great turnout and are extremely excited about the upcoming season. With 14 returners including ACHA honorable mentiones Meredith Harclerode, McKenzie Powers, Savannah Riley, and Chelsea Dietz, the huskies have taken the ice and are ready to play.
