Despite the state of Wall Street and a then-pending congressional rescue bill, a record number of employers and students turned out for Northeastern’s Fall Career Fair on Thursday.

More than 300 employers — including such leading firms as Apple Computer, Analogic Corp., EMC, General Electric, Microsoft and Raytheon — came to Cabot Cage and Solomon Court eager to recruit students for full-time positions.

Nearly 2,000 undergraduates, mostly seniors, and graduate students registered for the fair.

“This is the largest Fall Career Fair at Northeastern in more than a decade,” said Seamus Harreys, dean of student financial services. “It was a huge success, despite the economy, and that speaks to the breadth of majors, the value of co-op and the general academic quality of the students Northeastern can offer to major companies.”

Harreys noted that, while many of the companies have been participating in Northeastern’s career fair for several years, this year saw some new high-profile entries, such as Intel and Nokia.

“And we had a 30-company waiting list for participation due to increased demand,” he said. “However we were able to accommodate most of those on the wait list at the Career Fair or by providing other on campus opportunity to recruit Northeastern Students.”

He said the plan, given trends in participation, is to have a larger space available for the spring and fall 2009 Career Fair.

The next fair is scheduled for Feb. 5.
