Northeastern University invites designers, architects, artists, and students
to compete in an ideas competition for a new memorial to be prominently
located on campus. The University is seeking innovative ideas to acknowledge
the many Northeastern students who have given their lives in the country’s
wars. A jury of nationally recognized designers, military and ROTC representatives,
and members of the University community will evaluate the competition
entries and recommend the awards.
The University has committed to providing prize money of $10,000 for first
place, $5,000 for second place, and $2,500 for third place. There is no
promise that the ideas awarded will be executed as proposed, or that the
designers will be involved in the execution of the memorial. However,
that is not ruled out either. The objective of the competition is to ensure
that the memorial engages both the University community and the larger
public in the memory and purpose of these soldiers’ lives.
There are many ideas and themes that might inform your submission. For
example, consider that young lives are transformed by military service;
consider the sense of incompleteness that haunts those left behind; consider
the profound interdependence and camaraderie among young soldiers.
Characteristics of the memorial
Designs for the memorial should include: a clear relationship to the existing
spaces and paths surrounding the site; a small gathering space for quiet
reflection; and space for the names of the dead (up to 800 names). The
proposal should provide both a public identity and an environment for
private reflection.
The future site of the memorial is at the intersection of Forsyth Street
and the new Centennial Common. The site is currently occupied by a gazebo,
which will be removed. View photos of the future
site.
Jury
The jury tentatively is composed of the following people:
Neal Finnegan, chairman of Northeastern's Board of Trustees
Captain Brook Lee, NU ROTC
Maj. Gen. Wayne Wagner, NU ROTC alumnus
Kali Nikitas, chair, Department of Visual Arts, Northeastern
William Rawn, FAIA, architect, Northeastern master planner
George Thrush, FAIA, chair, Department of Architecture, Northeastern
David Lee, FAIA, architect, Northeastern master planner
Louise Firth, Northeastern Board of Trustees
Robert Campbell, Boston Globe Architecture Critic
Sarah Beecy, NU ROTC and Nursing Major, Class of 2007
Submission guidelines
Proposals should be mounted on one 24-inch by 36-inch Fomecore board,
1/4-inch thick. The only required drawing is a site plan at this scale:
1/8-inch = 1-foot, 0-inches. Views from multiple points around the site
would be desirable. All boards must be flat, with no materials projecting
forward from them. Models may be used but their presentation should be
limited to photographs or other two-dimensional representations. While
the competition is for ideas, entrants should keep a general budget range
of $250,000 to $750,000 in mind.
Submissions should be anonymous. Include no identifying markings on the
board that could reveal the identity of the designer(s). Rather, attach
a sealed envelope to the board containing information about each entrant,
including name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Upon receipt,
each board will be given a number tied to the envelope, and only the number
will be used during judging.
The entry fee is $25 and the check should be made payable to Northeastern
University. We cannot accept cash. All entry fees will be used for the
development, construction and ongoing maintenance of the memorial. See
the entry form for details.
Submission deadline is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. Winners will
be announced Nov. 1.
Boards should be mailed or delivered to:
