Health and Wellness Information
UHCS is a resource for health and wellness information to the Northeastern community.
We address the prevention needs of Northeastern students and provide information to the NU community in order to increase support for those in need of help.
We conduct regular assessments of campus health trends and student satisfaction in order to create an environment that promotes, encourages, and supports healthy decisions, behaviors and lifestyles.
Mumps Update-October 14, 2009
In early September, University Health and
Counseling Services (UHCS) saw students with
the most distinctive symptom of mumps (parotid
gland swelling). We contacted the Boston Public
Health Commission (BPHC) and Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and they
told us there had been 18 cases in New York and
New Jersey in the latter part of the summer.UHCS
clinicians monitored students for symptoms and
worked closely with the state lab and CDC in the
testing of mumps. Suspect cases were asked to self-isolate or move off campus for at least 5 days after the onset of symptoms and any students’ contacts were notified by email.
At this time there has been one confirmed case of mumps, one indeterminate case, two suspect cases have proved negative, and three suspect cases are pending test results. It is possible we may see more suspect cases of mumps this fall; therefore we all need to make an effort to minimize illness and risk to the Northeastern community through good hygiene. Checking your immunization status is the most important way to stop the disease but the emphasis on personal hygiene is also effective. Ironically all this comes at a time when we are concerned about flu-like illness as well, so hand washing is even more vital.
